Imagine the range of emotions that accompany being presented with a ‘seven grape blend from the Texas High Plains’. Several of my fellow wine professionals’ eyebrows shot up in an involuntary moment of what? just like mine had when it was first shown to me in Texas. I was with French importers and a German winemaker whose next reaction, also like mine, was let’s try this! I poured it a bit nervously (European professionals waiting to evaluate my find - yikes) and the next reaction, also like mine that day at the winery, was overwhelmingly positive. It’s that American ingenuity.

So not only can you introduce Pedernales 2016 Texas Family Reserve wine with an intriguing description, your choice will be validated by obvious great quality. Find a medium bodied, easy drinking red that undulates with red and dark berries, is smoothed out by soft oak, and finishes away cleanly with just the slightest hint of tart cherry. Its versatility allows it to match a variety of red meat, herbed, and red sauced based dishes. This is a beautifully done wine.

Check out the blend: 49% Tempranillo , 22% Malbec, 3% Petite Verdot, 8% Cab Sauv, 5% Mourvèdre, 8% Merlot, and 5% Sangiovese. Order through Pedernales’ website or contact Winelala. $60 from the winery.
