Imagine the range of emotions that accompany being presented with a ‘seven grape blend from the Texas High Plains’. Several of my fellow wine professionals’ eyebrows shot up in an involuntary moment of what? just like mine had when it was first shown to me in Texas. I became acquainted with Kloof Street’s 2018 Chenin Blanc at the Wines of South Africa masterclass in Philadelphia In March 2019. This bright, fresh wine has nose notes of honeysuckle, lemon cream, ripe pears, dried green herbs and wet granite, and is texturally balanced by a soft roundness and pith. The citrus meringue and mineral finish is long and lasting. Kloof Street’s chenin blanc is very versatile and can even serve as a breakfast wine if you’re looking for something a little different for brunch!
